Chapter twenty-four

Once More With Feeling

Raina

Everything has shifted. I’m no longer the happy girl starting fresh in a new town. Instead, I find myself held captive by a criminal who happens to be my next-door neighbour. I foolishly fell for this monster and allowed him to get close to me, even let him touch me. The years of enduring abuse have brought me no lessons, only an increased ability to endure pain.

The stories about the Devil are well-known, yet they rarely unveil his true nature. He’s often portrayed as a red, fork-tongued demon, tormenting you for eternity. But they fail to mention that this Devil wears the skin of a beautiful man, who speaks with a seductive tongue, captivating your mind with his words.

He came to me as everything I wanted, everything I needed.

A slimy snake tempting once again.

I stand in front of the abandoned warehouse with chilled winds brushing against my tear-stained cheeks. The cold penetrates my bones as the monster keeps me confined, emanating heat like a furnace. He runs his tongue over his teeth, amused.

“You and I are getting married.” His words stiffen my spine. This can’t be. Someone tell me all of this has been a long and vivid nightmare.

“No, this doesn’t make sense!” My voice panics.

His once-green eyes grow dark as he flicks a muscle in his jaw. “I don’t trust that you’ll keep this to yourself,” he pauses as dark satisfaction tightens his voice. "You won’t be able to testify against me, Raina. Not ever.”

“I promise, I won’t tell anyone!” I screech. “You know I’m good at keeping my mouth shut, please!” I finally beg, hinting at the night Milo killed Nicolas.

A sinister grin appears on Milo’s face as he leans in closer to me. I turn my face away from him as I feel his warm breath brush against the side of my neck. “I can’t risk that,” he growls. “Besides, I like it when your mouth is open, begging.”

He's trying to make me uncomfortable, and it's working.

I swallow thickly and try to fight the warm urge that creeps between my legs. Despite the fear, my body doesn’t seem to understand that he's no longer the same person I felt safe with.

He’s dangerous.

He’s a killer.

And now, I’m forced to marry him.

Not unless, I run. If I escape, there’s a chance he won’t find me, and I can finally start over.

God must have heard my prayers because the buzzing of his phone vibrates in his pocket as he pushes himself away from me. He pulls out his phone, glances at the bright screen and places it to his ear before he strides a few feet away with it.

Now is my chance.

Frantic, I fumble for my keys and immediately unlock the door. I leap into the car, locking it behind me. Milo’s furious gaze bores into me as he shoves his phone into his pocket and charges toward the vehicle. My heart races as I struggle to start the engine, his pounding fists reverberating against the glass window.
